Is 'Langama Pasala Hondama Pasala' Concept good or bad for Sri Lanka?

One School can shut down 10 prisons. This is a famous ancient quote. According to Wikipedia Sri Lanka has 10155 Schools. We can divide these schools as Provincial Schools and National Schools. Provincial Schools are controlled and funded by the Central Government while the national schools are controlled and funded by the Ministry of Education directly. National Schools are very limited and have more facilities than Provincial Schools. Due to this situation, there is an exam called Grade 5 Scholarship which a student can shift their school from a provincial school to a national school.

Bandaranayake College Gampaha

I also done this, and I moved to Bandaranayake College Gampaha from Mahagamasekara Maha Vidyalaya Radawana. Actually, personally I experienced these differences between those two schools. Most of my friends from Bandaranayake College found their passion since they were as school students. Rather than that they have done well in academics and other extra- curricular activities. Most of them selected to reputed state and private universities and other built their career as businessmen, pilots and by joining one of three forces.

Some of my collogues from the provincial schools also started their carrier but compared to national school outputs most of them were so limited in their potential. This is the harsh truth in Sri Lanka. If a person attended to a national school, they have the access to a various resource than a student who were in a provincial school. In that case parents are trying to admit their child to a national school. Within couple of years back Sri Lankan government renamed some provincial schools as national schools. But the problem is they only renamed them and done nothing for most of them. According to the concept they have to give a lot of facilities to change a provincial school for a national school.

Grade 12 trip with friends

According to my personal experiences actually I got my first internship from an IT company before I enter the university one of my friends from St. Josheph Vaz College Wennappuwa who started his own startup after the A/Ls. I built that connection due to my school because my school have math stream for A/Ls and both of us attended to the same A/L I.C.T. class. What if I attended to a provincial school. There is a chance that I can get a job. But it is too difficult due to the lack of connections with industries.

If government can reduce those issues by transforming provincial schools to national schools that would be a chance to change the mindset of parents. But the problem is the legacy of those schools might be a little bit of challenge to completely overcome the issue. For example, my school is the best boys' school in G.C.E. O/L results and all students who attended to the exam passed. Rather than that nearby 40% of them 9As and approximately 70% of them got from 9 to 7 As. Rather than that our Cadet Platoons and Western Bands are the pioneering Bands and Cadet platoons in Sri Lanka. With relevant physical and human resource combining with students' commitment can obtain these kinds of achievements.

When it come to the provincial schools it is very hard to obtain those type of achievements. According to my point of view there is a solution. If national schools can share their resources with provincial schools that would be great. For example, if a school haven't a playground and they can't conduct a sports meet can use a national school's playground to conduct their sports meet. Rather than that they can help students in academics by conducting zoom sessions to schools who haven't required number of teachers.

National Schools are very famous for their events. X'Ban is the biggest event that my school is conducting is an exhibition that all of the Nayakens do their contribution which is conducted once five years. If we can allocate some space for provincial schools' students in events, it will be a huge opportunity for all of them of achieve their goals. Doing collaborated projects is a good way to build friendships with them and unlock everyone's true potential as much as.

Finally, I can say 'Lagama Pasala Hondama Pasala' is a good concept but we have to work hard to apply this concept practically to all provincial schools in Sri Lanka. It will be a huge benefit to reduce the grade 5 scholarship competition among the students and have the ability to give a memorable childhood to all those children.
